Coach Fonz started wrestling his freshman year of high school. A much later start than his peers. He first wrestled under the great Coach Mark Sawicki at West Jefferson HS his freshman year. He then moved to Blackfoot Idaho wrestling under another great Brian Barlow and Hall of Fame Coach Kent Taylor.
In High School, Coach Fonz was a 4x state qualifier, 3x state placer, and 2x state champion 189 lbs, 215 lbs (Blackfoot HS). He also helped Blackfoot HS win two state championships in 07, 08. After his junior year winning his first state title he traveled to High School Junior Nationals in Virginia Beach with another great coach, Travis Henderson, where he took 3rd in the country at 189 lbs. That trip changed Coach Fonz's life as he became highly recruited.
Coach Fonz ultimately chose to wrestle for the University of Wyoming under 2x national champion (Oklahoma State University) Mark Branch. Another coach who made a big impact on Coach Fonz's Division I collegiate career was 2x national champion (Oklahoma State University) Chris Pendleton. In his time at the University of Wyoming Coach Fonz was a 2x All-American (7th, 6th at the Division 1 NCAAs) at 197 lbs in 2012, 2013. He was also a 2x Academic All-American.
Coach Fonz started coaching right after his collegiate career at the University of Wyoming as an assistant coach for 2 years. He took a two year hiatus as he attended graduate school obtaining his masters degree at Western University in Southern California in Physician Assistant Studies. He then moved back to South Eastern Idaho picking up where his wrestling career began. He has been coaching at the youth level from ages 5 to 18 for the last 6 years. He and Coach Bo reenergized Sublime Wrestling beginning in the fall of 2021. He realizes all the strong coaching figures he has had in his life positively changing it forever. In fact, Coach Kent Taylor married Coach Fonz and his High School Sweetheart, Stephanie. He strives to match their impact on the future generations to come.
Outside of wrestling Coach Fonz works as a physician assistant at Portneuf Medical Center in the general and trauma surgery discipline. He continues to actively compete in wrestling, jiu jitsu, and soccer. He loves hanging out with his family, going on date nights with his wife and attending his children's sporting events.
